Water filtration and scale prevention

Getting water chemistry right is only useful if the filtration system reliably delivers on target day after day — that's a maintenance discipline, not a one-time setup. Carbon filtration is the workhorse: it strips chlorine and off-flavors and captures sediment, but it does essentially nothing to change hardness or mineral content, so on its own it doesn't protect a machine from scale in a hard-water area. Scale-inhibition media (often polyphosphate) work differently — they don't remove calcium and magnesium, they sequester it chemically so it stays in solution instead of precipitating out inside hot equipment; this is a common, lower-cost option where full softening isn't practical.

Full softening or RDS (reduced dissolved solids) systems, blending softened or RO-treated water back with a bypass to hit a target hardness, are the more thorough answer for genuinely hard-water regions, since they change the mineral content itself rather than just inhibiting the reaction. This matters because scale is not cosmetic: as hard water heats, calcium carbonate drops out of solution and bonds to the hottest surfaces it touches, first the boiler's heating element, and coats it. That coating acts as an insulator, forcing the element to work harder and run hotter to heat the same volume of water, driving up energy use and often tripping thermal safety cutoffs; over time it narrows or blocks flow paths, restricts internal valves and solenoids, and shortens the working life of the boiler itself, the group head, and the steam wand.

Filter cartridges have finite capacity, rated in liters or gallons rather than calendar time, so they're exhausted faster at high volume, and once exhausted they stop protecting the machine even though water still flows through looking clean. Building cartridge changes into a fixed maintenance schedule, checked against manufacturer capacity ratings and actual usage rather than left until taste or scale problems appear, is what keeps a filtration system actually doing its job.
